Driver That Struck Three DC Protestors Not Charged

From the Huffington Post:

District of Columbia police said early Saturday that a driver will not be charged for striking three people taking part in an Occupy DC protest in downtown Washington.

Lt. Christopher Micciche of the D.C. police said the driver was not cited because he had a green light when his vehicle struck the three on Friday night.

He said witnesses told police that the three pedestrians “either ran toward or jumped in front of the moving vehicle.” He said one pedestrian jumped on the hood of the car. One of them was cited for being in the roadway.

So wait, it’s ok to hit people with your if they’re in the street? Is that how this works now? You’re in the street, you get hit by a car, and then you get a citation for being in the street? I say we should paint targets in crosswalks.

From the Washington Post:

Jesse Folks, 29, of Riverdale, said he was standing in the street with several dozen protesters near the convention center when the car “just gassed it into a bunch of people.”

When asked whether the protesters should have been standing in the street at all, Folks said, “we were in the street, but this guy didn’t even give us a chance to get out of the way.”

I don’t care if there was a protestor intentionally blocking the street; you don’t get to hit people with your car. If this was a story about an astroturfer Tea Party protestor getting run down in the street, the media would be calling for the driver’s head.
