President Obama has had a rough time matching accomplishments to rhetoric. Can he get us out of Iraq like he said he would? The President announced today that the Iraq War will finally come to an end by the end of the year.
This end date isn’t new; this was the date set forth in Status of Forces Agreement between the United States and Iraq that was signed under George W. Bush’s administration on November 17, 2008. So really, Obama hasn’t hastened the withdrawal of US forces in any way, he’s just following the plan Bush laid out. Also, I assume the 94 football field sized embassy we built in Iraq isn’t going condo.
Even though this represents no change in policy and most certainly does not mean an end to our involvement in Iraq nor does it bring to justice any of the people who foisted this war upon us or committed war crimes during it, I’m filing this under good news.
